quo warranton.

Brit. /ˌkwəʊ wəˈrantəʊ/, U.S. /ˌkwoʊ wəˈræn(t)oʊ/
Forms: late Middle English–1600s (1800s historical) quo waranto, 1500s– quo warranto.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French quo warranto; Latin quo warranto.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman quo waranto, quo warranto (1285 or earlier denoting the writ, 1298 or earlier denoting the action) and its etymon post-classical Latin quo warranto (1279 denoting the writ, 1290 denoting the action, both in British sources), literally ‘by what warrant’ < classical Latin quō , ablative of quī which (see who pron.) + post-classical Latin warranto , ablative of warrantum warrant n.1 The writ is so named from the formula which it contains.
Law.
Originally: a royal writ obliging a person to show by what warrant an office or franchise is held or claimed (now historical); frequently as writ of quo warranto. Later: a legal information or action challenging an alleged right to hold an office or to exercise a power (usually attributive). Also figurative.
