Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin quo, quid pro quo.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin quo (in quid pro quo quid pro quo phr.). Compare earlier quid pro quo phr., slightly later quid pro quo n., and later quid n.1 3.
In conjunction with quid: an action performed or thing given in return for something else, or in expectation of some return. Cf. quid pro quo phr. 2.
