Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: French adene; Latin aden; Greek ἀδέν-, ἀδήν.
Etymology: Partly < Middle French adene (1534 in Rabelais), and partly < either its etymon post-classical Latin aden (6th cent.) or that word's etymon ancient Greek ἀδέν-, ἀδήν gland < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin inguen inguen n. Compare earlier adenose adj.
Anatomy. Obsolete. rare.
A gland or lymph node.
