Etymology: < Quito, the name of the capital city of Ecuador (compare Quiteño n. and adj.), where the fruit is commonly found + orange n.1, after Spanish naranjita de Quito, lit. ‘little orange of Quito’ (c1800 or earlier; also naranjilla de Quito).In Ecuador apparently usually simply called naranjilla (denoting the fruit), naranjillo (denoting the tree); compare naranjilla n.
The fruit of the naranjilla, Solanum quitoense; (also) the plant itself.
