Etymology: Either < Spanish cuerda (see cordillera n.) or < Mexican, Cuban, and Puerto Rican Spanish cuarta whip, (especially) short whip with a braided leather lash (1816 or earlier; chiefly Mexican and Cuban), use as noun of cuarta , feminine of cuarto fourth (see quadroon n.).Latin American Spanish cuarta is perhaps a specific use of cuarta measure of length (1817 or earlier), with reference to the length of the whip's handle.
Originally and chiefly U.S. regional (western).
A whip; spec. a riding whip with a short handle and a braided leather lash.
