Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < classical Latin quippe indeed, forsooth (with sarcastic force), originally an interrogative phrase, ‘why so?’ < quid (see quid n.1) + -pe , final particle also seen in nempe of course, to be sure. Compare quip n.With the ending perhaps compare -y suffix6.
