Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin radiōsus.
Etymology: < classical Latin radiōsus radiant, resplendent (Plautus), in post-classical Latin also radial (from c1250 in British sources), of or belonging to the radius of a circle or sphere (1558 in the passage translated in quot. 1654 at sense 2), surrounded by rays of light, rayed (1701 in the passage translated in quot. 1708 at sense 1c) < radius radius n. + -ōsus -ous suffix. Compare Middle French, French radieux (a1461), Spanish radioso (first half of the 15th cent.), Italian radioso (14th cent.), all in sense ‘radiant, bright, resplendent’. With senses 2 and 3 compare radial adj. 2.
