Etymology: < Swedish raggare (1954) < ragga (slang) to drive around (1954), to (try to) pick up girls while driving around (1958), from the older (but partly still current) slang meanings ‘to drive around in a taxi trying to find customers or in a lorry trying to find assignments’ (perhaps related to Swedish regional ragga to walk with difficulty, to dawdle (compare Norwegian regional ragga to walk slowly, to drift around), probably (with expressive gemination of the consonant) < Swedish regional raga to stagger, totter, swing, apparently ultimately < the same Germanic base as rae n.) + -are -er suffix¹.

In Sweden: a member of a subculture favouring American cars of 1950s vintage and rock music. Also: such people collectively; their subculture.In the 1960s and 70s, raggares were chiefly working-class youths; now the subculture is associated with people of all ages.
