Etymology: < French quinzaine set of fifteen things, period of fifteen days (beginning of 12th cent. in Old French) < quinze (see quinze n.) + -aine , suffix forming nouns from numerals (see quatorzain n.). Compare Old Occitan quinzena fortnight (early 13th cent.).Compare also Anglo-Norman quinzeine , quinzaine , quinzeyne fifteenth day after a church festival (a1278 or earlier), post-classical Latin quinzena (1200 in a British source), of which some of the examples at sense 1 may show misapprehensions. Compare quindene n., quinzième n. 3b. With sense 2 compare Middle French quinzaine (16th cent.; rare). This sense is frequent in dictionaries of English, but otherwise very rare. Compare quatorzain n.
