Compare slightly later terceroon n.The word is found earlier in French than in Spanish, and may have been formed first in French (and the Spanish word perhaps modelled on this). However, the French word is first attested with reference to racial categorization in Peru, and the word is assumed to have been borrowed from Spanish in dictionaries of French.
