单词 quintroon
释义

quintroonn.

Brit. /ˈkwɪntruːn/, U.S. /ˈkwɪnˌtrun/
Forms: 1700s– quinteron (rare), 1700s– quinteroon, 1800s– quintroon.
Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly a borrowing from Spanish. Probably partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Spanish quinterón; French quinteron.
Etymology: Probably partly < Spanish quinterón (1748 or earlier; < quinto fifth (see quint n.1) + -erón , suffix, after cuarterón quadroon n.), and partly < French quinteron (1721 as quinterone ; < French quint quint n.1 + -eron : in quarteron quadroon n.), with remodelling of the ending after quadroon n.; compare -oon suffix. Compare slightly later terceroon n.The word is found earlier in French than in Spanish, and may have been formed first in French (and the Spanish word perhaps modelled on this). However, the French word is first attested with reference to racial categorization in Peru, and the word is assumed to have been borrowed from Spanish in dictionaries of French.
A person who is by descent fifteen-sixteenths white and one-sixteenth black; one who is fifth in descent from an African. One of a number of terms formerly used to designate degrees of racial mixture, and now considered offensive; cf. quadroon n., terceroon n., octoroon n., etc.
