Etymology: < French quintille (1680) < quinte fifth (see quint n.¹) + -ille (see -illa suffix), perhaps after quadrille , name of a card game (although this is first attested later, as are its equivalents in other languages: see quadrille n.²). Compare earlier quadrille n.²Spanish quintillo (1803 or earlier), which is sometimes suggested to be the etymon of the French word, is apparently itself < French. Compare also Spanish cinquillo (1780 or earlier).
