Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; apparently modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: quinti- comb. form, Latin clāvis.

Etymology: < quinti- comb. form + classical Latin clāvis key (see clavis n.), apparently after French †quinte à clef (undated), probably so called with reference to its pitch (compare quint n.¹ 2).The instrument was developed by J.-H. Asté (Halary) together with the ophicleide (see ophicleide n., French also †serpent a clef) and the clavitube (French †trompette a clef), first presented in 1817, and patented in 1821.

Music. Now chiefly historical.
