单词 quinta
释义

quintan.

Brit. /ˈk(w)ɪntə/, U.S. /ˈkwɪn(t)ə/
Forms: 1700s kintor, 1700s– quinta.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Portuguese quinta; Spanish quinta.
Etymology: Partly < Portuguese quinta large house or villa in the country or on the outskirts of a town (1199), and partly < Spanish quinta one fifth of gathered booty which is handed over to a leader (1076), one fifth of the produce of a country estate which is handed over as rent (1611), country estate (1591; 10th cent. denoting property of some sort, probably real estate), both apparently ultimately specific uses as noun of the feminine of Portuguese quinto , Spanish quinto (see quint n.1).Earlier currency of the word is apparently implied in the place name Quinta Parke (1606; now The Quinta, Devon); compare the following:1932 J. E. B. Gover & A. Mawer Place-names Devon II. 519 There can be little doubt that this is an early example of the introduction of the Spanish and Portuguese quinta, ‘county house’ or ‘villa’.. Such a name in a coastal parish to which some Devon seaman had retired is not improbable.
1. In Spain, Portugal, and Latin America: a large house or villa in the country or on the outskirts of a town; a country estate; spec. (in Portugal) a wine-growing estate.
