Godefroy Dict. de l'ancienne langue française (1880 –1902 )) or its probable etymon Italian guinzaglio leash (13th cent.), ultimately < Middle High German wintseil tentrope ( < wint (see wind n.¹) + seil (see sole n.³)). Compare Old Occitan guinsalh rope, leash (probably 12th cent., although this represents an editorial emendation).

Obsolete. rare.
