单词 quinquereme
释义

quinqueremen.

Brit. /ˈkwɪŋkwᵻriːm/, U.S. /ˈkwɪŋkwəˌrim/
Forms: 1500s cinquereme, 1500s cynquereme, 1500s– quinquereme, 1500s– quinquireme.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quīnquerēmis.
Etymology: < classical Latin quīnquerēmis type of galley rowed by oarsmen arranged in groups of five < quīnque- quinque- comb. form + rēmus oar (see reme n.1). Compare Middle French, French quinquérème (c1355), Italian quinquereme (a1470). Compare later pentereme n.
An ancient Greek or Roman galley rowed by oarsmen arranged in groups of five, perhaps with three banks of oars, one above the other, the top two each pulled by a pair of men, the bottom by one. Cf. pentereme n.There is continuing debate as to the precise significance of the numerical prefix. Some authorities believe that it refers to a ship having five banks of oars, but in view of the instability of such a design this is unlikely. Cf. trireme n.
