单词 quinque-
释义

quinque-comb. form

Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Forms: 1500s– quinque-, 1600s– quinqui-. Before a vowel also quinqu- (rare)
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quīnque-.
Etymology: < classical Latin quīnque- five-, combining form of quīnque five < the same Indo-European base as five adj.Examples of formations in classical Latin are the nouns quīnquefolium (see quinquefoil n.), quīnquennium (see quinquennium n.), quīnquerēmis (see quinquereme n.), quīnquevirī (see quinquevirate n.), the adjectives quīnquefolius (see quinquefoil n.), quīnquemestris (compare quinquemestrial adj. ), quīnquennālis (see quinquennal n.), and the participle form quīnquepartītus (see quinquepartite adj.); others appear in the later language. Borrowings and adaptations of Latin words are first found in the 15th cent. (compare quinquennal n., quinquennial adj.), in some cases via French. Formations within English are found from the second half of the 17th cent., and are frequent in the 18th and 19th centuries. Combining with elements ultimately of Latin origin. Compare bi- prefix, tri- comb. form, quadri- comb. form.
Forming adjectives and nouns with the sense ‘having, consisting of, etc., five of the things indicated by the second element of the compound’.
