Etymology: < post-classical Latin quinquagesima fiftieth day (counting inclusively) before Easter (7th cent.), period of fifty days before Easter (9th cent.), first week of this period (9th cent.), use as noun (short for Quinquagesima dies fiftieth day) of feminine of classical Latin quīnquāgēsimus fiftieth < quīnquāgintā fifty (see quinquagint n.) + -ēsimus , extended form (after vīcēsimus ) of -simus , suffix used to form ordinal numerals. Compare Quinquagesime n.Post-classical Latin quinquagesima is attested earlier in the senses ‘period of fifty days after Easter, i.e. from Easter to Pentecost’ (4th cent.), ‘fiftieth day after Easter’ (5th cent.). Compare also Quadragesima n.
The period beginning with the Sunday immediately preceding Lent and ending on Easter Sunday (now rare); †the first week of this period (obsolete). Now usually: = Quinquagesima Sunday n. at Compounds 2.
