Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin quīngentī , centenary adj.
Etymology: < classical Latin quīngentī five hundred ( < quīnque (see quinque- comb. form) + centum a hundred (see centum n.2), after septingentī seven hundred: see septingentenary n.) + -enary (in centenary adj.). Compare post-classical Latin quingentenarius of five hundred (6th cent.), commander of a body of five hundred warriors (7th cent.). Compare earlier quincentenary adj., quincentenary n.
