Etymology: < post-classical Latin quindena (also quintana ) fifteenth day after a festival, counting inclusively (13th cent. in British sources), period of fifteen days (frequently from 13th cent. in British and continental sources) < classical Latin quīndēnī fifteen each < quīndecim fifteen (see quindecemvir n.) + -ēnī , suffix forming distributive adjectives (see nonagenarian n.).

Christian Church. Now historical.

The fourteenth day after a festival (this being the fifteenth day when counted inclusively, following ancient Roman practice); (hence) the period of fifteen days beginning with the day of a festival. Cf. quinzième n. 3b.
