单词 radiophone
释义

radiophonen.

Brit. /ˈreɪdɪə(ʊ)fəʊn/, U.S. /ˈreɪdioʊˌfoʊn/
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: radio- comb. form2, -phone comb. form; radio- comb. form3, -phone comb. form.
Etymology: Apparently partly < radio- comb. form2 + -phone comb. form, and partly (especially in later use) < radio- comb. form3 + -phone comb. form. With sense 1 compare French radiophone (1881; apparently < English: see note), and slightly earlier radiophony n. With sense 2 compare earlier radio-telephone n.French radiophone is first attested in a paper by A. G. Bell (1881), in Ann. de chim. et de physique 23 397–432, where the term occurs on p. 424. This paper (published in July 1881) is apparently a translation of Bell's paper read before the National Academy of Sciences (of the United States) on 21 April of the same year, the source cited in quot. 1881 at sense 1. Although Bell credits E. Mercadier with the term, no use of French radiophone by Mercadier has been found before 1885; however, compare téléradiophone (see teleradiophone n. at tele- comb. form 1a).
