释义

radioliten.

Brit. /ˈreɪdɪə(ʊ)lʌɪt/, U.S. /ˈreɪdiəˌlaɪt/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: radius n., -o- connective, -lite comb. form1.
Etymology: < radius n. + -o- connective + -lite comb. form1. In sense 1 after either French radiolite or scientific Latin Radiolites, genus name (both in Lamarck Système des animaux sans vertèbres (1801) 130). In sense 2 after German Radiolith (J. Esmark, cited in Jrnl. f. Chemie u. Physik (1828) 52 361); compare Swedish radiolit (1846).
Now rare.
1. Palaeontology. A rudist bivalve mollusc of the Cretaceous genus Radiolites or family Radiolitidae; = radiolitid n. N.E.D. (1903) gives another sense, for a kind of cephalopod, citing G. B. Sowerby Man. Conchol. (1839) 91, but this arises from a misreading of Radiolites for Radiolata.
