A protozoan of any of several classes of the phylum (or superclass) Actinopoda, comprising planktonic marine organisms that have slender radiating axopodia and usually lattice-like siliceous skeletons with projecting spines, the remains of which form substantial recent and fossil marine deposits.The ‘freshwater radiolarians’ of some 19th-cent. authors are now classified as heliozoans.
