Etymology: Apparently < rack n.7 + of prep. + the plural of bone n.1 Compare rack-bone n.There is probably no connection with Scots ragabenes , etc., ‘carcass’ (see Sc. National Dict. at raaga n.), nor with Scots rag ‘lean scraggy animal or fish’ (see Sc. National Dict. at rag n.1). Compare also Scots and English regional (northern) rackle of bones , ruckle of bones very thin or emaciated person, skeleton (see Eng. Dial. Dict. at rackle sb.2 and ruckle sb.2, and see ruckle n.1).
U.S. colloquial.
A skeleton. Now chiefly in extended use: an emaciated person or animal (esp. a horse).
