单词 quilter
释义

quiltern.

Brit. /ˈkwɪltə/, U.S. /ˈkwɪltər/
Forms: 1500s quylter, 1600s– quilter.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: quilt v.1, -er suffix1.
Etymology: < quilt v.1 + -er suffix1. Compare Old French, Middle French coutier person who makes beds and duvets (13th cent.), post-classical Latin culcitarius mattress-maker (4th cent.), culcitrarius quiltmaker (13th cent. in British sources), cultarius (a1223 in a British source, probably in same sense; perhaps transmission error). There are numerous earlier examples as surname, but in all such cases it is unclear whether the English word or an (apparently otherwise unattested) Anglo-Norman parallel is shown; e.g.: Radulfus le Cuiltier (1186), Johannes le Cuilter (1207), Thomas le Coylter (1241), etc. Compare also the following uses as an occupational term, where the identity of the word as Middle English or Anglo-Norman is again uncertain:1294 in G. Fransson Middle Eng. Surnames (1935) 96 Will. de Suthkarleton, le Qwelter.1309–10 in G. Otto Handwerkernamen in Mittelengl. (1938) 23 Quylter.
