Etymology: < classical Latin rānula little frog (2nd cent. a.d.), in post-classical Latin also small swelling under the tongue of cattle (4th cent.) < rāna frog (see ranid n.) + -ula -ula suffix.
Medicine.
A tumour or swelling located in the floor of the mouth beneath the tongue; spec. a bluish, domed mucocele arising from a sublingual salivary gland.
