Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a Norwegian lexical item. Etymons: rantle n., tree n.
Etymology: Apparently < rantle n. + tree n., perhaps after Norwegian regional randa-tre, randar-tre beam or bolt above a fire from which pots were hung (compare also rand-aas in the same sense). Compare later rannel-balk n., rannel-perch n.A reduced form rantree, raintree, rentree is occasionally attested in 20th-cent. Scots.
Chiefly Scottish, English regional (northern), and Irish English.
A bar of wood or iron fixed horizontally across a chimney (chimney n. 1), from which the chain or hook for holding cooking pots is hung. Also figurative. Cf. rantle n.
