Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Hebrew. Etymons: Latin Adar; Hebrew 'ăḏār.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Adar (Vulgate) and its etymon Hebrew 'ăḏār < Akkadian addāru (also adāru), of uncertain origin.In First Adar after post-biblical Hebrew 'ăḏār ri'šōn, the name of the intercalary month (see note at definition; also wă'ăḏār ( < wā- and + 'ăḏār )). In Second Adar after post-biblical Hebrew 'ăḏār šēnī. The second elements of Adar Aleph and Adar Bet reflect the Hebrew use of the letters 'ālep aleph n. and bēṯ (see B n.) as cardinal and ordinal for ‘one’, ‘the first’, and ‘two’, ‘the second’, respectively.
In the Jewish calendar: the sixth month of the civil and twelfth of the religious year, consisting of 29 days and usually coinciding with parts of February and March; (also) an intercalary month of 30 days preceding this month in leap years.In leap years known by a modified name, as VeAdar, Adar Sheni, Adar Bet, or Second Adar, with the intercalary month called Adar, Adar Rishon, Adar Aleph, or First Adar.
