单词 | quagga |
释义 | quaggan. An extinct southern African zebra, Equus quagga, which was chiefly brown with white legs and darker brown stripes on the head, neck, and foreparts. Formerly also: the common zebra, E. burchelli, and the mountain zebra, E. zebra; (now rare). E. quagga was formerly widely regarded as a variety of the common zebra, E. burchelli, and recent genetic research appears to support this. The last known individual died in captivity in 1883, but attempts are under way to recreate the species by selective breeding.
