Etymology: < Dutch quagga, quaga, quaca (1778; > Afrikaans kwagga ), probably < Khoekhoe ||koaah , etc. (compare also note and quot. 1731), apparently of imitative origin, after the braying call of the animal ( > Xhosa iqwarha quagga, zebra). Compare opeagha n.Attested earliest in European word-lists of Khoekhoe (then called ‘Hottentot’), transliterated as quacha (C. Juncker 1710, with Dutch and Latin glosses), quaiha (P. Kolb 1719, apparently with German glosses; compare quot. 1731), translated with words for ‘donkey, ass’. The South African English pronunciation with /x/ reflects the pronunciation in Dutch (and Afrikaans), while the British and U.S. pronunciations show substitution of /ɡ/ for /x/.

An extinct southern African zebra, Equus quagga, which was chiefly brown with white legs and darker brown stripes on the head, neck, and foreparts. Formerly also: the common zebra, E. burchelli, and the mountain zebra, E. zebra; (now rare). E. quagga was formerly widely regarded as a variety of the common zebra, E. burchelli, and recent genetic research appears to support this. The last known individual died in captivity in 1883, but attempts are under way to recreate the species by selective breeding.
