beyv.

Forms: Old English bégan, bíegan, bígan, býgan, Middle English beiȝen, Middle English beien, Middle English beie, beighe(n, beyghe(n, Middle English bie, buyen, buȝen, bye, 1800s dialect bay.
Etymology: Common Germanic: Old English Anglian bę́gan, West Saxon bíęgan, bígan, býgan weak verb = Old Frisian bêja , Old Norse beygja (Swedish böja , Danish böie ), Old High German bougen (Middle High German böugen , modern German beugen ), Middle Dutch bôghen , Gothic baugjan , causative of biugan , baug , in Old English búgan , béah to bow (intransitive). In the 13th cent. there was confusion between this verb, and the primary buȝen to bow v.1, partly because both verbs began to be used both transitively and intransitively, partly because of the ambiguity of the letter u (= ū or ü ), so that buȝen might be for Old English búgan , or Old English býgan . At length the strong verb took also a weak past buȝede , buhde : see bow v.1 Bey, bay, is not found in literature after the 14th cent., but seems to have survived in dialects.
Obsolete.
1. transitive. To bend, cause to bow.
