单词 quadru-
释义

quadru-comb. form

Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g. quadrupole n. and adj.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quadru-.
Etymology: < classical Latin quadru- < the same Indo-European base as the first elements of Avestan čaθrugaoša- having four ears, Gaulish Petrucoriī (the name of a people), literally ‘four armies’, ultimately < the same Indo-European base as four adj. In Latin quadru- occurs before labials (chiefly p , as quadrupēs (see quadruped n. and adj.), quadruplex quadruplex adj., quadruplus (see quadruple n., adj., and adv.)), functioning as a variant of quadri- quadri- comb. form.Borrowings and adaptations of Latin words (partly via French) are found from the 15th cent. onwards, as quadruple n., quadruple adj., quadruplex adj., quadruped n., etc. A number of derivatives and other formations modelled on these words are also found. Very occasional new formations within English are also found, the earliest apparently being quadrulapse n. in the late 16th cent.; compare also quadruplane n., quadrupole n. Additionally, many words in quadri- comb. form show occasional variants with quadru- , and vice versa. With the exception of quadrulapse n. and quadrucorn n. , this combining form in English follows the Latin pattern of only combining with a second element beginning with a labial.
Forming a small number of words with the sense ‘having four, fourfold’ (cf. quadri- comb. form), chiefly modelled on Latin words.
quadrucorn n. Obsolete an animal with four horns; cf. quadricorn n.
