Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quartadecimanus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin quartadecimanus, quartodecimanus member of a group of early Christians who celebrated Easter on the 14th day (5th cent.; usually in plural, quartadecimani , quartodecimani ; already in classical Latin (as quartadecimānī ) denoting the men of the 14th legion) < classical Latin quartus decimus fourteenth ( < quartus fourth (see quart n.2) + decimus tenth: see decimal adj.) + -ānus -an suffix. Compare Middle French quartodecimain (1560).Classical Latin diēs may be either masculine or feminine. The form quartadecimanus is formed from quarta decima, feminine (compare quarta decima die, Vetus Latina); the form quartodecimanus is formed from quartus decimus, masculine (compare quartus decimus dies, 6th cent.).

Any of a group of early Christians who celebrated Easter on the day of the Jewish Passover (the 14th of Nisan), whether this was a Sunday or not.The practice (chiefly observed in Proconsular Asia) was condemned by the Council of Nicaea, a.d. 325.
