Etymology: < Italian quartiere district of a city (a1327) < post-classical Latin quarterium , in the same sense (see quarter n.). Compare quartier n.Not fully naturalized in English. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (kwā:rtĭę̄·rę) /ˌkwaːrtiˈɛːrɛ/. In plural form quartieri after the Italian plural form.
In Italy: a district or area (of a city). Also in extended use.
