单词 | quartessence |
释义 | quartessencen. rare. An essence one degree less pure than a quintessence. Also: a fourth essence. ΚΠ 1605 T. Tymme tr. J. Du Chesne Pract. Chymicall & Hermeticall Physicke i. xi. sig. G4v It is called a quintessence, but more truly and properly a quartessence [L. quartam essentiam]. 1936 E. E. Sikes Lucretius v. 105 There must be a fourth essence, of the finest possible atoms, which the Greek Epicureans called ‘nameless’; to Lucretius it is the quarta natura. This quartessence was obviously a makeshift to account for the mystery that a body, in itself non-sentient, can have sensation. 1996 G. Rees & M. Edwards Philos. Stud. 6th Ser. p. xlvii Duchesne's air and fire appeared in a purer form in the celestial quartessence, and terrestrial fire aspired to the permanence of heavenly fires.
