释义

quartermastern.

Brit. /ˈkwɔːtəˌmɑːstə/, /ˈkwɔːtəˌmastə/, U.S. /ˈkwɔrdərˌmæstər/
Forms: see quarter n. and master n.1; also Scottish pre-1700 quartaris maisteris (plural).
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: quarter n., master n.1
Etymology: < quarter n. + master n.1, after Middle Dutch quartiermeester naval officer responsible for organizing the watches (also ‘official responsible for the superintendence of a district’) (Dutch kwartiermeester , also ‘military officer’ (16th cent.)). Compare Middle Low German quārtērmēster naval officer, official responsible for the superintendence of a district, German quartiermeister military officer (16th cent.), naval officer (19th cent.), and also post-classical Latin quatronus magister (1444 in a British source), quartimagister (1461 in a British source), quartermagister (1502 in a British source), all in sense 1a (after the English), French quartier-maître (a1637 in sense 1a, 1804 in sense 3; probably originally after the Dutch). With sense 2c compare Middle French maistre de quartier (1582 in the passage translated in quot. 1582; probably after Dutch kwartiermeester ) and slightly earlier quarterman n. 1.
