A division of land used in Scotland, the Isle of Man, and Ireland, varying greatly in extent according to locality. Also: land characterized by such divisions.In Scotland: one-fourth of a principal division of land (as a davach or a ploughgate); cf. quot. 1950. In the Isle of Man (originally): one-fourth of the division of land called a treen or a balla. In Ireland: a townland (cf. quarter n. 5b).
