Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymons: German Quetsche, Zwetsche, Zwetschge.
Etymology: < German Quetsche, regional variant of Zwetsche, Zwetschge, Zwetschke plum, damson (15th cent.; earliest in southern and south-western dialects) < post-classical Latin damascena (see damson n.), via a Romance form with v for Latin m that gave rise to Old French davoisne, Middle French davoine. Compare Dutch kwets (1758), French quetsche (1869 as quetche; earlier as French regional (Lorraine) questsche (1768), quoetches, coitches, plural (1775)).In sense 2 shortened < German Quetschenwasser (1777 or earlier), regional variant of Zwetschenwasser , Zwetschgenwasser ( < Zwetsche (as above) + wasser : see water n.).
1. A variety of plum of German origin, having oval, dark-skinned fruit used chiefly for cooking, preserving, and drying; a plum of this variety. Frequently attributive.
