Etymology: < post-classical Latin quadragesima forty-day fast, Lent (4th cent.), first Sunday in Lent (9th cent. in a British source; also Dominica quadragesime (c1250 in a British source)), use as noun (short for quadragesima dies fortieth day) of feminine of classical Latin quadrāgēsimus fortieth < quadrāgintā forty ( < quadrā- ( < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek (Doric and Ionic) τετρώ- (in τετρώκοντα forty) < an ablaut variant of the Indo-European base of four adj.) + -gintā , suffix forming cardinal numerals from thirty to ninety, related to decem ten: see decem- comb. form) + -ēsimus , extended form (after vīcēsimus ) of -simus , suffix used to form ordinal numerals.
