Etymology: Apparently ultimately an alteration of -qualone (in methaqualone n.). The spelling with -aa- was probably suggested by Maalox n. (another product of the same company), and the ending may have been suggested by interlude n. (perhaps playing on quiet interlude): see Word Mysteries and Histories (1986) 193, although it is unclear what evidence is available to support this.Originally a brand name.

Originally Pharmacology. Chiefly U.S.
