Etymology: < Chinese Qín (Wade-Giles transcription Ch'in), the name of the dynasty, previously the name of a feudal state in the north-west of the pre-imperial Chinese culture area (9th–3rd cent. b.c.) out of which the dynasty, with its characteristic institutions, developed.
