Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pébrine.
Etymology: < French pébrine (A. de Quatrefages 1858, in Comptes rendus 47 530) < Occitan pebrina (although this is apparently first attested later: a1886) < pebre pepper (see pepper n.; compare quot. 1868) + -ina -ine suffix4. Compare Catalan pebrina (14th cent. denoting nigella, 1933 in this sense). N.E.D. (1904) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (pebri·n) /peɪˈbriːn/.
A disease of silkworms caused by the microsporidian parasite Nosema bombycis, and characterized by the appearance of dark spots on the insect and the stunting of its growth. Also pébrine disease. Cf. Nosema n.
