Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: adapt v., -ion suffix1; adaptation n.
Etymology: Either < adapt v. + -ion suffix1 (compare later adapt adj. and discussion at that entry, and perhaps compare also adoption n.), or shortened < adaptation n.
Now nonstandard.
= adaptation n. (in various senses).Despite the long history of adaption in English, adaptation is now the preferred form (see Oxf. Guide Eng. Usage (ed. 2) 52).
