Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin Python , -o- connective, -morph comb. form.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Python (see python n.1) + -o- connective + -morph comb. form, after scientific Latin Pythonomorpha, former order name (E. D. Cope 1869, in Proc. Boston Soc. Nat. Hist. 12 254).
Palaeontology and Zoology.
A. n.
Originally: any of various large extinct marine reptiles of the former order Pythonomorpha (corresponding to the present-day suborder Mosasauria); a mosasaur; (now disused). Now: any reptile of the clade Pythonomorpha, which comprises the mosasaurs together with modern snakes.
