[Said (already by ancient writers) to be so called either from its use in the Pythian oracles, or from the first song of triumph to Apollo on his victory over the Python; the former view is found in Pliny, and both theories in grammarians and metrical writers, from the 4th cent.] ΚΠ 1851 Encycl.
