Etymology: < ancient Greek Πυθιαδ-, Πυθιάς the Pythian games < Πύθια the Pythian games, use as noun (short for Πύθια ἱερά the Pythian games) of neuter plural of Πύθιος Delphic (see Pythian n.) + -άς -ad suffix1. Compare Middle French, French Pythiades (1572 in the passage translated in quot. 1603, now rare). Compare earlier Pythian games n. at Pythian n. and adj. Compounds and Olympiad n. 2.Compare the following earlier and apparently isolated example of a direct borrowing of ancient Greek Πύθια the Pythian games:1528 T. Wyatt tr.
