Origin: Either (i) from a proper name, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: proper name Pythagoras , -ism suffix; Greek Πυθαγορισμός.
Etymology: Either < the name of Pythagoras (see Pythagoras n.) + -ism suffix, perhaps after Platonism n., or directly < Hellenistic Greek Πυθαγορισμός principles and practice of Pythagoras < ancient Greek Πυθαγόρας , the name of Pythagoras (see Pythagoras n.) + -ισμός -ism suffix, after Πυθαγορίζειν Pythagorize v. Compare French Pythagorisme (1712 or earlier). Compare earlier Pythagorize v. and Pythagorist n.
The philosophy or doctrine of Pythagoras or his followers; = Pythagoreanism n.
