Etymology: < post-classical Latin pyruvicus (in acidum pyruvicum pyruvic acid (J. J. Berzelius 1835, in Ann. der Physik u. Chem. 36 5)) < pyro- pyro- comb. form + classical Latin uva grape (see uva n.) + -icus -ic suffix.
Chemistry.
1. pyruvic acid n. a yellowish, liquid organic acid which was first obtained by distilling tartaric acid and is an intermediate in many metabolic processes, esp. glycolysis.Systematic name: 2-oxopropanoic acid; CH3COCOOH.
