Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Pyrrol.
Etymology: < German Pyrrol (F. F. Runge 1834, in Ann. der Physik u. Chem. 31 67) < ancient Greek πυρρός reddish (see pyrrhous adj.) + German -ol -ol suffix (compare -ole suffix2). Compare also German Rothöl (1834 in the same source, now Rotöl).
Chemistry.
A weakly basic, sweet-smelling, liquid, heteroaromatic compound, present in bone oil and coal tar; any substituted derivative of this compound.The pyrrole molecule has a five-membered ring containing one nitrogen atom. Formula: CH=CH·CH=CH·NH.
