Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: quarter n., evil n.1
Etymology: < quarter n. + evil n.1; in sense 1 so called on account of its affecting the animal first in one of its quarters (compare quot. 1800). Compare quarter ill n.
1. The disease blackleg (sense 1a), esp. in cattle; = quarter ill n. In later use chiefly South African.
