Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pyrosoma.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Pyrosoma, genus name (M. Péron 1804, in Ann. Muséum National d'Hist. Nat. de Paris 4 437) < ancient Greek πυρο- pyro- comb. form + σῶμα body (see soma n.²). Compare earlier pyrosome n.In quot. 1834 showing an unchanged plural form.

Zoology.

A genus of pelagic, colonial thaliaceans (tunicates) found in tropical waters, the sole genus of the order Pyrosomida, which consists of brilliantly phosphorescent, translucent individuals united into a hollow cylinder closed at one end; (also pyrosoma) an animal of this or a related genus; = pyrosome n.
