Etymology: < pyro- comb. form + ancient Greek ϕύλλον leaf (see phyllo- comb. form) + -ite suffix¹, after German Pyrophyllit ( R. Hermann 1829, in Ann. der Physik u. Chemie 15 592), so called on account of its exfoliation when heated.

Mineralogy.

An aluminosilicate mineral resembling talc, occurring as white or pale-coloured foliated masses which exfoliate when heated.Pyrophyllite is an aluminium hydroxide and silicate, formula Al₂Si₄O₁₀(OH)₂, with a phyllosilicate structure. Crystal system: monoclinic.
